the lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice / part one

"the LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice..." psalm 97:1

I read this verse today in, believe it or not, an essay I had to read for my college class. I was struck so deeply at it. This verse is full---full of hope and truth and promise.

If you are living in America and reading this you have likely seen the masses growing desperate in light of our upcoming election. Perhaps you are a part of these masses. Looking at the coming election you have all your hope set on a certain candidate, and if he or she doesn't get the presidency you will surely have to move to another country because only this person could get the US out of the pit we find ourselves in.

Or maybe you are completely lacking hope---how could any of these candidates be a good leader? What is America coming to? you ask yourself.

Then you look outside our walls, or maybe you are reading this from outside of the US. You can attest to the fact that America isn't the only one who doesn't have it together politically, socially, economically.

Maybe you watch The Hunger Games and you think to yourself, I could actually see this happening in our world.

Know this, dear reader: no political leader, no non-profit, no social media movement can truly rescue us. Why? Because none of those people or things reign. Only our God reigns, and in that we can rejoice.

We can rejoice in the fact that our God is sovereign and in his sovereign action he is wise. His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8). We can trust that the Lord is active and working in all of this. He reigns, and he is victorious! I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

As your facebook feeds and dinner table conversations become a place of despair over where the world is going remember that the Lord reigns and in that we can rejoice.
