what do we truly need

Come on in, dear friend. Grab your favorite mug with some warm drink of comfort and read on because I know you need rest, I know you need a break, I know that the phone keeps ringing and that person keeps showing up in your life and that fragile heart of yours is so broken and the world has no off days for the heart-broken even when getting out of the bed to get groceries, or to make it on time for class, or to head into that tiny cubicle seems like a trek up Mt. Everest.

And I know that your load is heavy; you have the kids, the homework, the boss, the husband, the girlfriend, the family drama, the bills. And I know it is easy to go through life head down, eyes staying closed shut because maybe, just maybe, if your eyes are closed tight you won't have to worry about that to-do list. Maybe, just maybe, if you close your eyes tight enough it will all go away.

Or maybe you think once you open those hopeful eyes of yours a boyfriend will be standing next to you, or friends galore will be calling you, or your wife will become perfect, or your math ability will suddenly become superb (can I get a witness?), or suddenly the house will be spotless and the kids will all start getting along and you'll actually feel like going to that stupid book club. Maybe you'll open your eyes and you'll feel beautiful, after years of feeling so much less than.

But, as great as those things are, we don't need a pep talk on why you are a strong, independent woman who don't need no man, and we don't need to be told we're capable of so much more than we think, and we don't need another advertisement telling us we are beautiful just the way we are.

No, in the middle of hectic schedules and in the muck of at-the-end-of-our-rope living and when we are consumed by less than fulfilling lives what we need is our Maker, what we need is perspective. What we need is to open our eyes to him, his glory, his majesty.

Because life isn't about little ol' me or little ol' you. Life is about the one who knit us together in our mother's womb, the one who spoke the Universe into being, the one who commands the seas and restores our souls and saves us from hell.

And, inevitably, we focus less on ourselves when our focus is on him. And the more we focus on him the more in awe we become of his greatness, his goodness, his sovereignty and find ourselves on our knees at the feet of our Maker in thankfulness and wonder, instead of on our knees in defeat over how much we lack in our own lives.

Truthfully, I don't truly need all the things I think I do. You don't need all the things you feel you do. What we need is to open our eyes to more of him.

God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.
